Parakeets are by far the most popular feathered companion! Their gregarious nature, bright colors, and propensity for fun make them a great companion for the whole family! Parakeets will bond closely with their pet parents if the time is taken to hand tame them. If you prefer a pet that will remain in its habitat with little human interaction, it is best to get 2 parakeets, as they are very social. Parakeets can be taught to talk and mimic sounds. They love to play with toys and provide hours of entertainment! They require a habitat that is at least 18″ x 18″. Parakeets love to chatter– won’t you let them fill you in on all the fun they have in store for you?

Cannaries are known for their beauty and their song and have been kept as pets since the 1400s. They are not companion birds and are better admired from afar, but this doesn’t make them any less of a great pet. They do spend a lot of time in their cages, so you need an adaquately sized cage with perches on either end to provide them with maximum flying space. If you want a Canary that sings, you will need to find a male. If this is very important to you, you should arrange ahead of time with the breeder to be able to return the bird if it proves to not be a singer. Keep in mind that males sing to attract females, so they should not be kept in pairs. They also don’t sing in the summer because it is molting season. We have also heard to not put mirrors in their cages because Canaries are very territorial and they may see this “second bird” as a threat, so we don’t recommend this.

Love Birds are mostly known for their affectionate behavior towards their “chosen mate.” They love nothing more than “hanging out” with their bonded mate (which can be his or her owner, or another bird). These little birds are truly devoted to their owners. This, however, may cause problems of jealousy towards other birds and other pets (including cats and dogs). These brave little beings will not think twice about attacking other birds much larger than themselves, even cats and dogs — anybody indeed whom they perceive as rivals for your attention.  Most of them are true clowns, playing for hours at a time. They love hanging from their toys, resting in their birdie tents, riding on their owner’s shoulder. Their most favorite place of all is usually their owner’s shoulder; snuggling up to his or her neck or hiding in their sweaters. When they get bored, they are likely to chew on clothing and jewelry, and pull off buttons. So it’s best to protect your clothes when you have your pet with you.

Cockatiels are among the most popular pet birds. Small parrots with a variety of color patterns and a crest, they are attractive as well as friendly and easy to tame. Because of their small size, cockatiel care and taming is easier than some other parrot species. They are capable of mimicking speech, although they can be difficult to understand. However, they are quite good at whistling and can often be taught to whistle tunes. It is best to choose a hand fed baby or at least a young bird that has been handled regularly. Prices will vary with color and you can expect to pay a bit more from a conscientious breeder, but a well handled young bird is worth any extra cost.
